Since 1993 I have been researching the Hungarian fortification system constructed in the Eastern Carpathian Mountains. Those territories where this fortification system was set up belonged to the Hungarian Kingdom, and later to the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy up to the end of the 1st World War.

Construction of the fortification works was the task of the local branches. Considerable attention was paid to the fortifications because the front was approaching and less and less time was at the disposal of the constructors.

The construction of the fortifications created the most favourable conditions for defence, but combat had to be joined by the fort soldiers. So there were always differences in how they were trained, what level they drilled to and how well they knew the rules of defensive fight.

The reorganisation of the Hungarian Armed Forces began in 1943, after the annihilation of the Second. Hungarian Army at the Don Bend. According to the judgement of the government and the military leadership the forthcoming German military operations could have no other purpose than delay and gaining time, in other words the prolongation of the military operation up to an acceptable peace treaty for Germany.

The fortification of the operational foreground of the Árpád-line was decided at the time of the creation of the “Defence of the Carpathians” conception in 1943. The terrain was especially suitable for this purpose because the passes of the main ranges of the Carpathian Mountains, in other words: the Hungarian frontier could be approached only from a few directions.
